An oblong outline is the longest in the table and its three widths run close to parallel, so the advice has two halves: shorten the visible length, and put width somewhere the face has none. There are three places to put it — across the forehead, at the sides, and at the ends — and every cut below uses at least one.

The Longest Row in the Table
This page's headline number sits at an extreme. The oblong length ratio is the highest of the seven and lands at the top of the published band, and unlike most shapes there is no second dimension doing the work beside it: the forehead ratio and the jaw ratio are both high and close to the square row, which is what makes the three widths read as equal from the front and the sides of the face look straight.
That parallel-sided quality is the reason the usual advice for a long face is incomplete. Shortening is only half of it. A face whose sides run straight also has no width anywhere along its length, so a cut that only covers the forehead leaves the outline long and narrow — which is what it started as. Width at the sides is the other half, and it is the half most often skipped, because it is the one that cannot be bought with a single change in length.

Everything above the middle of that range is in the longer half of the table, and the difference is worth knowing before you choose, because it changes how much of the advice below applies. Near the bottom of the range the outline is closer to oval, and only the extremes matter — skip the tall updo, skip the very long centre-parted length, and most of the rest is preference. Near the top, all three of the width positions are worth using at once rather than picking one.
Three Places to Put Width
The three positions are not interchangeable, and using one alone is usually not enough. Which two you pick depends on where in the range above your length ratio sits.
Across the forehead
A fringe or curtain bangs covering part of the forehead shortens the visible face, because the hairline is where face length starts on the tape as well as in the eye. This is the fastest of the three and the most reversible, which makes it the right place to start if you are not sure how much of this page applies to you.
The limit is that it only works at the top. A face shortened at the forehead and still narrow at the sides reads as a shorter narrow face, which is a real improvement but not the one the shape needs.
At the sides
Waves or curls carrying width at cheekbone and jaw height, or a cut with the fullness left at the sides rather than taken out of them. This is the half most often skipped and the half the parallel sides need.
It is worth being explicit about why this is not the same instruction as “add width at the cheeks” on a round face, where it would be exactly wrong. On a round outline the cheeks are already the widest point, so adding there widens a dimension at its maximum. On an oblong outline nothing is at its maximum horizontally — the three widths run close to equal — so the same instruction adds the only thing missing.
At the ends
Chin-length and shoulder-length cuts end the vertical line before it runs on past the jaw. Where the line lands matters more than how much hair is left: a cut that stops at the collarbone puts a horizontal edge across the outline at a point where the face has already ended.
The failure here is very long, straight, centre-parted hair falling past the chest, which continues the face's own vertical line downward instead of stopping it. The same length with waves at the sides and a part that is off-centre does not, because a horizontal line at cheekbone height crosses the vertical one.
Women's Cuts and Men's Cuts
Both have the same three places to put width, and both have to give up the same thing. Height above the crown is how most short cuts are made to look deliberate, and on this outline it adds length to the row that already has most of it.

A short crop with a fringe and the sides left full does all three positions at once, and that is why the combination is on the list at all: the fringe covers part of the forehead, the full sides put width where the outline has none, and the crop stops the vertical line before it runs on.
The same crop with the sides clipped tight and nothing across the forehead is the version that fails, because it gives up the fringe and the width while keeping the shortest length. Texture on top is worth asking for, but spread across the crown rather than built up above it.
If you wear a beard, this is the shape where it costs the most. Growth left long at the chin adds length below the jaw, which is the exact direction this page is arguing against. Kept close at the chin and fuller along the sides of the jaw, it adds width instead and stops being a problem.

Oblong and oval are both longer than they are wide, and the length ratio is the only feature that separates them in the rule set. What distinguishes them visually is the gradient of the three widths: an oval's step down from cheekbones to forehead to jaw, while an oblong's run close to parallel, which is what makes the sides of the face look straight.
The haircut consequence is real and worth stating, because these two pages give opposite instructions about length.
