A heart outline is the widest at the forehead and the narrowest at the jaw and chin at the same time, so the whole page is one instruction: move weight down. Every cut below either puts volume at or below the jaw, or keeps the top flat — and those are the same move seen from opposite ends.

Two Widths, Running the Wrong Way

This is the only row in the table where the forehead measures wider than the cheekbones, and it is simultaneously the row with the narrowest jaw and the narrowest chin. So the outline does not taper gently the way an oval's does — it starts at its maximum and runs downward from there. That single gradient is what every recommendation on this page answers.

It is worth being precise about what “add volume at the jaw” means, because the loose version of that advice is wrong. Volume at cheekbone height does not help: the cheekbones sit inside the forehead's width, but they are not the narrow part either, so adding there widens the middle of a face whose problem is at both ends. The weight belongs at or below the jaw line, where the outline has actually run out of width. Everything above that is a matter of keeping the top quiet rather than making it smaller.

The forehead ratio is the highest in the table and the only one that clears the cheekbone width. The jaw ratio and the chin taper are the lowest, matched only by diamond. Read together those three rows are the shape: a wide top, a narrow bottom, and a point at the end of it.

The length ratio sits in the longer half of the table, so this outline is long as well as top-heavy — which is why long hair is not the problem it is on an oblong face. The jaw angle sits at the median of the seven, so it is not what separates this shape from anything and it is the one number not worth measuring twice.

Where the Weight Goes

Below the jaw

This is where the weight belongs, and it is the only place on this outline where adding volume cannot go wrong. Long waves carrying their fullest point at or below the jaw, a lob ending at the collarbone, layers that start at the jaw rather than above it.

The effect is to give the lower half of the face a width it does not have, which brings the gradient closer to the one an oval outline carries — without touching the measurement underneath, and without the top of the face having to be reduced to get there.

At the jaw

A chin-length cut is the strongest single option here, and it is positional rather than stylistic: the line lands exactly where the outline narrows, so the eye stops at the widest point of the hair instead of following the taper all the way down to the point.

Ends turned outward work better than ends turned in, and the reason is the same one that governs the whole page — an inward curl narrows the silhouette at the one place it was already narrow, which is the opposite of what this row needs.

Above the cheekbones

Keep it quiet. A side part moves the volume off the centre of the forehead, the widest point on the row. A curtain fringe swept to the sides covers the outer corners of the hairline without covering the middle, which reduces the apparent width without adding a horizontal line across it.

What does not work is height at the crown combined with volume at the temples. That is width stacked on top of the widest part of the outline, and it is the easiest way to get this shape wrong without meaning to, since a lot of cutting finishes with lift at the crown by default.

Women's Cuts and Men's Cuts

Length is not the constraint on this shape, so the two columns differ mainly in how much material there is to place.

Women's

Chin-length waves, a collarbone lob with layers starting at the jaw, a deep side part, and curtain bangs swept outward. A heart outline carries long hair well, so the target silhouette is the same at every length: flat above the cheekbones, full at the jaw and below.

Men's

Shorter at the crown and at the temples, with the length left at the sides and the fringe kept off the centre. A side part does the same job here that it does on the women's cuts: it moves the volume off the middle of the forehead.

Facial hair is the strongest lever available on this shape, because it can add width at the exact place the outline has none. Even length along the jaw kept fuller toward the sides, and a beard line that follows the jaw rather than coming to a point at the chin. The failure is a pointed goatee, which extends the chin point the outline already has and lengthens the taper instead of filling it.
