Here is what the guides leave out. An oval face runs its beard in the opposite direction from a round one. On a round face you grow the chin and starve the cheeks, because the face needs length and cannot afford width. On an oval face the cheeks can carry length — the jaw is already narrower than the cheekbones, so a few millimetres there fills the taper instead of fighting it — and the chin is the zone that must not extend, because the face is already longer than it is wide and every millimetre below the jaw pushes the ratio toward oblong. The constraint is directional, not permissive. “Anything goes” is not the answer. It is the absence of one.

What follows: both zones in millimetres, inches and clipper guard numbers; five published specs set side by side with their dates and the gap between what they say and what they omit; the direction reversal spelled out against the round-face chart; the point at which an oval face stops being versatile and starts being borderline — which is a measurement, not a vibe; and the maintenance findings from people who grow these beards rather than write about them, which is where the actual technique lives.

The length chart

Two zones, because on this outline they do opposite jobs from the ones they do on a round face. Out on the cheek, length is width — but an oval face has width to spare at the jaw, where the bone already tapers below the cheekbones. A few millimetres sitting there fill the taper rather than widen the silhouette. Down under the chin, length is length — and an oval face has none to spare. It is already one and a half times longer than it is wide. Every millimetre below the jaw extends the dimension that is already dominant.

The practical consequence: on a round face the two zones are pushed as far apart as growth allows (cheeks at 0.5 to 3 mm, chin at 6 to 25 mm). On an oval face they are held close together, and the ceiling sits on the chin, not on the cheeks.

What did not move, and what did

Four years, five sources, and the field has not converged on anything except the word versatile. Three of the five use it or a synonym. The other two imply it by listing styles without ranking or constraining them. Not one source gives a two-zone spec. Not one gives a chin ceiling. Not one says what happens when the face length ratio sits at the top of the oval band rather than in the middle.

The single number that exists — Braun’s 1 to 3 mm — covers stubble only. It does not say what a full beard should run on this outline, does not separate cheek from chin, and does not state a maximum. It is one band of one zone.

The Beard Club comes closest to a constraint: “avoid anything that dramatically over-extends the chin.” That is the correct direction. It is also the only sentence in the entire published field that acknowledges the chin is the dangerous zone on this outline rather than the safe one. But “dramatically” is not a number, and without one the instruction cannot be applied — it can only be agreed with.

What has not moved: the claim that oval is versatile. Every source says it. None of them tests it. None of them states the condition under which it stops being true.

The direction runs opposite to round

This is the part that makes an oval-face beard chart a different document from a round-face one, rather than the same document with softer numbers.

On a round face, the beard’s job is corrective. The face is roughly as wide as it is long, with no corner below the ear and three widths running close together. The beard adds length where the face has none (chin: 6 to 25 mm) and removes width where the face has too much (cheeks: 0.5 to 3 mm). The two zones are pushed as far apart as growth allows. The ratio between them — chin to cheek — is the entire mechanism. Three to one is the floor. Four to one is stronger.

On an oval face, the beard’s job is not corrective. It is preservative. The face is already one and a half times longer than it is wide, the cheekbones are the widest point, the forehead is narrower, and the jaw tapers below both. Nothing needs adding and nothing needs removing. The beard follows the outline instead of redrawing it — and the moment it starts redrawing, it redraws in the wrong direction, because the only direction available is the one the face already has too much of.

  • Round face: chin long, cheeks short. The differential IS the style. A round-face beard at one length all the way round is the worst available outcome — both zones lose at once.
  • Oval face: cheeks and chin held close together, with the ceiling on the chin. An oval-face beard at one length all the way round (3 to 5 mm) is the EASIEST available outcome — it follows the bone. The failure is not uniformity. The failure is differential in the wrong direction: chin longer than cheeks, extending a face that is already long.

When versatile stops being true

Every source says an oval face can carry almost anything. That is true in the middle of the range and false at the top of it, and the difference is a measurement rather than a matter of taste.

This site classifies a face on five readings: the face length ratio, the forehead ratio, the jaw ratio, the jaw angle and the chin taper. Two of them decide an oval result. The face length ratio separates oval from oblong — an oval lands near 1.45 to 1.5, an oblong near 1.65 or above. The chin taper separates oval from diamond and heart — an oval ends in a soft curve, a diamond or heart in a distinct point.

Those values are not constants everybody agrees on. They are read off the prototype table this site’s classifier runs against — the same table published on the oval face guide and the rule-set page, the same numbers the detector measures your face against. The oval prototype sits at 1.45 with a band from 1.27 to 1.63; the oblong prototype sits at 1.65 with a band from 1.47 to 1.83. If the calibration moves, the boundary moves with it, and so does this paragraph.

The versatile claim holds when the length ratio sits near 1.45. There is slack in both directions: the face can absorb a few millimetres of chin extension without crossing into oblong, and a few millimetres of cheek width without crossing into round. At 1.45, almost anything genuinely works.

It stops holding at 1.55 — the midpoint between the two prototypes, which is also where the oval-vs-oblong question stops being settled by the ratio alone and starts depending on the second test: whether the jaw tapers. A face at 1.55 with a tapering jaw is still oval. But it is oval at the boundary, and the slack above it is 0.08 of ratio (to 1.63, the top of the oval band) rather than 0.18. A chin beard that extends 15 mm below the jaw adds roughly 8 to 10 mm of perceived face length. On a 180 mm face — cheekbones 116 mm apart, which is what a ratio of 1.55 means at that length — it takes 9.3 mm of added length to reach 1.63. That sits inside the 8 to 10 mm range rather than above it: the bottom of the range falls just short of the line, the top of it goes over. So the question is not whether a chin beard can push a borderline oval past 1.63. It can. The question is whether yours adds 9 mm or 10, and at that margin you cannot tell by looking.

At that point the avoid-list stops being a suggestion:

  • Do not extend the chin past 10 mm. This is not a style preference. It is the boundary condition.
  • Do not grow a ducktail, an extended goatee or a Van Dyke with a point. These are length-adding styles built for faces that need length.
  • Do not let the beard’s lower edge drop below the jaw onto the neck. A lowered line adds visual weight at the bottom and extends the perceived length further than the hair itself does.
  • Keep the cheeks equal to or slightly longer than the chin. On a borderline oval, the cheek zone is the one place you can add without cost — it widens the jaw, which pulls the ratio DOWN, which is the direction with slack.

What the growers found

The published guides describe styles. The people who actually maintain these beards describe problems, and the problems are specific enough to be useful in a way no style list is.

The clipper will not cut your chin. Sideburn hair stands stiff. One pass at 1 mm or 3 mm with a guard and it is done, evenly, first time. Chin and upper-lip hair frequently does not stand — it lies flat and it curls, so the comb slides over the top of it, the blade meets nothing, and you come away with a strip that looks trimmed and a dozen hairs still at full length sticking out of it. The fix is not a better clipper. It is a different tool for that one zone. An electric foil or rotary shaver run lightly over the chin leaves roughly a millimetre with a faint roughness to it — close enough to a guard setting to blend into one at the jaw. A manual razor gives a cleaner line and the stubble comes back even the next day. Scissors come last and only for the individual wiry hairs that survive every other pass. They correct. They never set a length, because nothing holds them to a number.

The first tool is usually the wrong one, and you find out six weeks late. A fixed-comb trimmer with four snap-on lengths plus the bare blade gives you five positions: 1 mm bare, and whatever the three or four combs happen to be — typically 3, 5, 7, maybe 10. That is enough for a stubble you never intend to change. It is not enough for a beard where the cheeks sit at 5 mm and the chin at 8, and the discovery arrives about six weeks in, once the beard is long enough to have a shape worth protecting and you realise the comb you need does not exist in the box. A dial covering 0.5 to 10 mm in half-millimetre steps — twenty settings, which is the range Philips publishes for its Beardtrimmer 3000 series — reaches every row in the chart above. A dial covering 1 to 24 mm exists and costs more; the extra range above 10 mm is haircutting territory rather than beard territory on this outline, because the chart ceiling is 10.

Three to five days is the maintenance rhythm, not three to five weeks. Growers who hold a shape report trimming stray hairs every three to five days — not resetting the length, not running the guard over everything, but taking down the hairs that have got ahead of the rest. The full guard pass, the one that resets the number, runs every three to four weeks depending on growth rate. Between those, the daily or every-other-day job is the edge: the upper cheek line and the lower jaw line, kept sharp with a razor or a bare trimmer. A sharp edge is what makes a 5 mm beard read as a decision rather than as neglect. A blurred edge at the same length reads as a face that was not shaved this morning.

The awkward phase is real and it is not a density problem. Days one to seven: the beard is at its stiffest and its sharpest because the ends are freshly cut and stand straight out. It scratches. It looks patchy because every follicle runs on its own clock — some hairs are already 2 mm while the ones beside them have not broken skin. The patchy look reads as a density problem, so out comes the razor, everything goes back to zero, and the cycle restarts from the same uneven place. The correct move runs the other way: do not shorten the whole beard to fix the patchiness. Set the guard to your target number, take down only the hairs that have got ahead, and leave everything else alone to catch up. You are levelling, not resetting. The slow follicles surface between days eight and fourteen. By week three the map is true and you can tell whether your growth supports the style you picked — and not a day sooner.

Cheek puff is the failure nobody names. On a round face the documented failure is a beard that adds width at the widest point. On an oval face the equivalent failure is subtler: hair that grows outward rather than flat against the cheek, puffing the silhouette at exactly the point where the face transitions from front plane to side plane. The puff does not add width to the bone. It adds width to the outline the eye reads, which is the same thing visually and a different thing measurably. Beard wax pressed into the cheek zone — not the whole beard, just the sides where the hair stands away from the face — holds the growth flat and removes the puff. A boar-bristle brush run through the beard after the wax distributes it and neatens the direction. The combination is what separates a beard that reads as maintained from one that reads as growing, at the same length, on the same face.

Colour contrast changes the number. The further your beard colour sits from your skin colour, the more beard there appears to be at any given length. The same 4 mm reads as heavy stubble on one man and as a shadow on another. A beard that has lightened or gone yellow at the tips visibly disappears at a distance while it is still growing. Curl does the same thing from the other direction: a wiry hair holds itself away from the face and occupies more space than a straight hair of the same length. Straight, fine growth needs more length to reach the same visual density — so if that is what you have, the chart numbers are a floor rather than a target.

A guard number is a label, not a measurement

This applies to every chart on this page including this one, and it is worth knowing before you trust any of them.

Wahl’s American chart lists a #3 guard at 3/8 of an inch, which is 9.5 mm. Wahl’s European chart lists the same #3 guard at 10 mm. One manufacturer, two official pages, half a millimetre apart. Neither is wrong, because neither is a measurement — the fraction is what gets stamped on the plastic, and the millimetre is what somebody rounded it to afterwards. The somebody is Wahl itself, on its own European page.

So treat the guard number as a position on a ladder and the millimetre as the thing you are actually aiming at. This is the argument for a trimmer with a dial rather than a set of snap-on combs. A dial calibrated in half-millimetre steps holds a number. Three combs at 1, 3 and 5 mm do not, and you find out exactly how limiting that is the first time you want 4.

One more discrepancy. Philips describes 0.5 mm as a three-day beard on its 5000-series product page. People who have grown one describe three to five millimetres as the length that reads as stubble rather than as a shave you missed, and 0.5 mm as what you get on day one or two. The manufacturer is describing what the dial can be set to. The growers are describing what a face looks like. Both are true and they are not talking about the same thing — which is why the chart above starts the chin at 3 mm instead of at the bottom stop.

The number drifts, and it drifts in the direction that hurts

Beard hair grows at something like 12 to 15 mm a month — call it 3 mm a week — and it grows at that rate on the cheek as readily as on the chin. A beard set at 5 mm on the cheeks and 5 mm on the chin is, six weeks later, sitting at 23 mm and 23 mm. The differential has not changed — there was none — but the absolute length has crossed the ceiling. The chin is now at 23 mm, which is nearly double the 10 mm maximum this outline tolerates before the ratio starts moving toward oblong.

On a round face, drift is survivable for longer, because the two zones are pushed apart and the gap holds even as the absolute numbers climb. Three millimetres on the cheek against ten on the chin is a ratio better than three to one; six weeks later it is 21 against 28, and the ratio has collapsed to barely more than one to one — the style is gone, but the face still reads round underneath it, which is what it was fighting.

On an oval face, drift is not survivable at all past the ceiling, because the failure is not a collapsed ratio. It is an extended one. A chin at 23 mm on a face whose ratio was already 1.55 has pushed that ratio past 1.63. The face no longer reads as oval with a beard. It reads as oblong with a beard. The shape changed underneath the hair, and the hair is why.

So holding the number is the ongoing job, and on this outline it is specifically the chin that needs holding. A dial trimmer run over the chin and the lower jaw every five to seven days keeps the length where you set it. The cheeks can go a week or ten days between passes — they are the zone with slack. The chin cannot. Skip it for a month and the beard gets longer and the face gets longer at the same time, which is the combination this outline specifically cannot afford.

If you want one answer and not a chart: 3 to 5 mm all over, one dial setting, no differential, edges kept sharp with a razor every other day, full guard pass every three to four weeks. That is the beard that follows an oval outline instead of redrawing it, and it is the one most growers land on after trying the alternatives.

If you want the shape to do something: let the cheeks run to 6 or 8 mm and hold the chin at 5. That is a mild differential in the safe direction — it fills the jaw taper without extending the face. It is the opposite of the round-face differential, and it is the only differential this outline tolerates.

What does not work, regardless of where your ratio sits: a ducktail, an extended goatee, a Van Dyke with a point, or any style whose name includes the word “extended.” Those are length-adding styles built for faces that need length. An oval face does not need length. It has length. The beard’s job is to not add more.

What this page does not settle is whether the outline underneath the beard is the one you think it is. Every number above assumes a face about one and a half times longer than it is wide, three widths stepping down from cheekbones to forehead to jaw, and a chin that curves rather than points.
