Numbers for this do exist, and they do not agree with each other. One grooming site publishes a two-zone table putting a round face at 12 to 25 mm on the chin and 3 to 6 mm on the cheek. A beard retailer publishes a single all-over figure of 10 to 25 mm for the same face shape, with “avoid very short stubble” beside it. A third gives no number at all and says keep the sides short. Three specs, three different answers, and nobody reconciling them — which leaves you holding a direction instead of a setting. Below is the reconciliation: a chart giving both zones in millimetres, inches and guard numbers at once, then the reasoning that picks between the three, then what to do when your own growth declines to cooperate with any of it.
The length chart
Two zones, because one number does opposite jobs in each of them. Out on the cheek, length is width: every millimetre sitting there is at the widest point of the outline and adds to it. Down under the chin, length is length: every millimetre there extends the dimension the outline has least of. A beard trimmed to a single number all the way round is therefore not a cautious middle option. It is the one setting under which both zones lose at once.
The inch column and the millimetre column are not the same kind of number, and the difference shows up the moment you go to buy a guard. Clipper guards are stamped in fractions of an inch. Beard trimmers are calibrated in millimetres, usually on a dial, and the dial is what reaches the short end — the shortest comb Wahl makes is a #1/2 at 1/16 inch, which is 1.6 mm, so anything below that in the chart is a dial setting and has no guard at all.

Why these numbers and not the other three
The published specs disagree mainly about the chin, and most of that disagreement is an artefact of how the rows are written. A figure of 12 to 25 mm with “keep the sides short” beside it, or 10 to 25 mm with the same caveat, is not really one number for the whole face. It is a chin number with the sides left undefined, which means the row is not contradicting the chart above so much as omitting half of it. Read them that way and the three specs are closer together than they look.
The part that genuinely conflicts is the instruction to avoid very short stubble. It comes from a real mechanism: under about 3 mm there is not enough hair to cast a shadow, so the beard stops reading as a beard and starts reading as a face that was not shaved this morning. The chart keeps that rule exactly where it belongs, on the cheek, which is why the cheek band sits at 3 mm, with only two cheek rows under it: the upper cheek, kept only where it fills in, and the cheek cleared outright. It does not apply the rule to the chin, because a chin at 3 to 5 mm over a cheek at 0.5 mm is not a short beard. It is a difference, and the difference is the thing doing the work.
What follows is the arithmetic that decides between the short spec and the long one, and it is worth doing rather than trusting. The eye reads the ratio between the two zones, not the gap. Three millimetres on the cheek against 10 on the chin is a ratio better than three to one. Six against 25 is four to one — stronger, but six weeks further away, and in the meantime the face is carrying more total hair at its widest point than this outline wants. So the longer spec is not the better one. It is the more expensive one, and it is only available at all if your chin growth reaches 25 mm evenly, which a great deal of growth does not.
Which makes the choice concrete rather than stylistic. Dense, even chin growth and the patience to wait six weeks: take the long spec. Anything else: take the short one, and take the ratio from the cheeks rather than from the chin, because clearing a cheek costs you nothing and growing a chin costs you a month.
A guard number is a label, not a measurement
Here is the thing that will annoy you if you check it, and you should check it. Wahl's American chart lists a #3 guard at 3/8 of an inch, which is 9.5 mm. Wahl's European chart lists the same #3 guard at 10 mm. One manufacturer, two official pages, half a millimetre apart. Neither is wrong, because neither is a measurement — the fraction is what gets stamped on the plastic, and the millimetre is what somebody rounded it to afterwards.
So treat the guard number as a position on a ladder and the millimetre as the thing you are actually aiming at. This is the argument for a trimmer with a dial rather than a set of snap-on combs. A dial calibrated in half-millimetre steps from 0.5 to 10 mm — twenty settings, which is the range Philips publishes for its Beardtrimmer 3000 series — will hold a number. Three combs at 1, 3 and 5 mm will not, and you find out exactly how limiting that is the first time you want 4.
One more discrepancy, worth knowing before you trust any chart including this one. Philips describes 0.5 mm as a three-day beard. People who have grown one describe three to five millimetres as the length that reads as stubble rather than as a shave you missed, and 0.5 mm as what you get on day one or two. The manufacturer is describing what the dial can be set to. The growers are describing what a face looks like. Both are true and they are not talking about the same thing, which is why the chin row above starts at 3 mm instead of at the bottom stop.
Days one to seven, and the week that makes people quit
Growth is not even, and the unevenness peaks at precisely the moment you are most likely to look in a mirror and give up. Every follicle runs on its own clock. Some hairs are already 2 mm long while the ones beside them have not broken skin, so the beard at day four is genuinely patchier than the beard at day twelve will be — not because anything went wrong, but because the slow ones have not arrived yet.
This is where nearly everyone makes the wrong move. The patchy look reads as a density problem, so out comes the razor, everything goes back to zero, and the cycle restarts from the same uneven place it restarted from last time. Nothing was ever allowed to reach the point where the slow hairs fill the gaps the fast ones left.
The correct move runs the other way and is not intuitive: do not shorten the whole beard to fix the patchiness. Shorten only the hairs that have got ahead of the rest. Fit the guard, set it to your target number, take the fast growers down to it, then leave everything else alone and let it catch up. You are levelling, not resetting, and the distance between those two verbs is the reason some people end up with a beard and some end up with three weeks of stubble and a decision to stop.
There is a second reason not to shave back to zero and it is physical rather than visual. Fresh stubble in its first week is at its stiffest and its sharpest, because the ends are freshly cut and stand straight out — which is why a two-day beard scratches people. The tips wear down and it softens. Judging a beard by how it feels in week one means judging it by the only week in which it feels like that.
- Days 1–2: nothing to work with. Do not touch it and do not evaluate it.
- Days 3–7: the stiffest and patchiest point of the whole process. Still do not evaluate it.
- Days 8–14: the slow follicles surface. Density now is closer to density eventually.
- Days 15–21: first real trim. Guard on, target number, take down only what has got ahead.
- Week 4: you can finally tell whether your growth supports the style you picked, and not a day sooner.
When the clipper will not cut your chin
A guard works by holding hair up against the blade at a fixed distance, which only works on hair stiff enough to stand. Sideburn hair is. One pass at 1 mm or 3 mm and it is done, evenly, first time. Chin and upper-lip hair frequently is not — it lies flat and it curls, so the comb slides over the top of it, the blade meets nothing, and you come away with a strip that looks trimmed and a dozen hairs still at full length standing out of it.
When that happens, stop arguing with the clipper and change the tool for that one zone. An electric foil or rotary shaver run lightly over the chin leaves roughly a millimetre with a faint roughness to it, close enough to a guard setting to blend into one at the jaw. A manual razor gives a cleaner line and the stubble comes back even the next day. Scissors come last and only for the outliers — the individual wiry hairs that survive every other pass. They correct. They never set a length, because nothing holds them to a number.
The expensive version of this mistake is buying the wrong trimmer first. A fixed-comb model with four lengths plus the bare blade gives you five positions, one of which is 1 mm and none of which is in between. That is enough for a stubble you never intend to change. It is not enough for a style with the cheeks at 3 mm and the chin at 10, and the discovery arrives about six weeks in, once the beard is long enough to have a shape worth protecting. A dial covering 0.5 to 10 mm — the range Philips publishes — reaches every row in the chart above except the longest, and the rows it reaches are the ones this face shape actually uses.
Worth saying plainly, because it is the advice handed out most often and the one that works least: do not attempt a first shape with scissors because somebody recommended scissors. Everybody who has tried it reports the same sequence — the line wanders, the two sides come out different lengths, and the correction costs more hair than the original error did.
Three edge lines that add a circle to a circle
Length is half of it. The other half is the shape of the line where the beard stops, and on this outline that line matters more than the number does, because a curve is the one thing the face already has in abundance.
The first failure is a beard whose lower edge follows the jaw round in a smooth U. It is the shape you get by default if you let growth happen and only tidy the neck, and it is the worst outcome available: the arc sits directly on top of the arc underneath it, the two reinforce each other, and the face reads rounder than it measured. The fix is not a different style. It is a different line. Cut the upper edge and the lower edge as straights meeting at a corner and the same beard at the same length stops echoing the jaw.
Where you put that lower edge decides something else, and it is worth being exact about it because the usual instinct is to place it low to make the beard look fuller. A line dropped onto the neck does not merely add weight under a jaw that has none. It removes the jaw angle, which is the single feature this site's rule set reads to tell a round outline from a square one — on a square face the line below the ear turns a corner, on a round one it keeps curving, and a beard edge sitting below the jaw replaces both readings with a downward slope. That is also why a shape you assessed in the mirror with a low beard line often comes out differently once the beard is shaved down and the measurements are taken against skin. The face ends where the jaw turns, not where the hair stops.
The second is a moustache grown thin and dressed downward at the corners. A downward slope drags the visual centre of the face with it, and a sparse one drags it while pointing at the sparseness. Where the growth is dense enough, trimming the moustache flat across instead of waxing the ends down removes the drag and makes the whole lower face read harder. Where it is not dense enough, the honest answer is to drop the moustache from the style and keep the chin — which is a Van Dyke, not a compromise.
The third looks like it should work and does not: bare cheeks with a single strip of growth running along the jawline. It appears to satisfy the rule, nothing at the widest point and definition at the edge, but the strip curves with the jaw, so all it has done is redraw that curve in a darker colour. It starts working the moment the upper and lower edges are cut straight, which turns it from an outline of the jaw into a line across it.
The fade down the cheek, and two ways to fake density
One length technique buys more on this outline than any style choice, and it is not a style. Run a gradient down the side of the face: shortest at the sideburn, stepping longer as you work down toward the jaw. Two or three dial settings across the whole distance is plenty. What it produces is shadow without bulk — the darkening that makes a beard look like a beard, with none of the outward thickness at cheekbone height that costs you the shape.
Set the top of that gradient slightly above where your growth naturally starts, not along it. The natural boundary is the one thing on the face you did not choose and cannot straighten: it runs at whatever height the follicles decided on, it is usually uneven, and a fade starting there begins from a line that already wanders. Draw the edge a little below it and the gradient has one clean horizontal to work down from, which is what makes it read as a decision rather than as growth you have not got round to.
It does a second thing at the same time. With the mass sitting low and the top edge thin, the sides of the face read tighter and the outline reads longer, which is the effect every style in the chart is trying to produce by other means. If you take one technique from this page and it is not the chart, take this one.
Two things change how much beard you appear to have without changing its length by a millimetre, and both are worth knowing before you conclude you have too little. The first is contrast. The further your beard colour sits from your skin colour, the more beard there appears to be at any given length — which is why the same 4 mm reads as heavy stubble on one man and as a shadow on another, and why a beard that has lightened or gone yellow at the tips visibly disappears at a distance while it is still growing. The second is curl. A wiry hair holds itself away from the face and occupies more space than a straight hair of the same length, exactly as curly hair on the head does. Straight fine growth needs more length to reach the same visual density, so if that is what you have, the chart numbers are a floor rather than a target.
Pick from your growth, not from the name
Every style in the chart assumes an area of coverage. In practice the area varies far more than the length does. Some growth covers the whole lower face evenly. Some arrives on the upper lip, the lower lip and the chin and simply never appears on the cheeks, however long it is left. Some is chin only. The same 10 mm at the chin reads as a goatee in the second case, as a short boxed beard in the first, and as a patch of hair on a jaw in the third.
So the order of operations matters, and it runs the other way from how most people do it. Grow for two to three weeks without shaping anything at all, then look at where it actually came in rather than at where you wanted it to. The map you get at week three is the true one. Choose from that.
If your cheeks stay bare, that is not a defect to be worked around. It removes several styles from consideration and makes the remaining ones easier, because you never had to decide how to taper a cheek. Chin-only growth is a goatee or a Van Dyke and there is nothing to negotiate. Full even coverage is the only case where the whole chart applies, and also the only case where the fade down the cheek is available to you.
Whatever the map turns out to be, have the first shape cut by someone who can see the front and the profile at once, then hold the number yourself between visits. Maintaining a length you have already been given is a dial. Finding the line for the first time is not, and the asymmetry you introduce doing it is expensive to undo.
The number drifts, and it drifts in a direction that is easy to miss, because the gap never changes. Beard hair grows at something like 12 to 15 mm a month — call it 3 mm a week — and it grows at that rate on the cheek as readily as on the chin. A beard set at 10 mm below and 3 mm at the sides, a ratio better than three to one, is six weeks later sitting at 28 mm and 21 mm. There are still exactly 7 mm between the two zones. The ratio has collapsed to barely more than one to one, and the style has gone with it, because what the eye reads is the ratio and not the gap.
So holding the number is the ongoing job rather than a one-off, and it is specifically the cheek zone that needs holding. A dial trimmer run over the sides every five to seven days keeps the ratio where you set it without the chin ever losing a millimetre of what you grew. Skip it and the beard gets longer and worse at the same time, which is the combination nobody expects.
What this page does not settle is whether the outline underneath the beard is the one you think it is. Every number above assumes a face about as wide as it is long, three widths running close together and no corner below the ear, and if yours turns a corner instead then the jaw is doing the opposite job and the chart reads backwards.
